SoN Students Spend two weeks in Romania
Nursing and child/adolescent development students just returned from a 2 week study abroad trip to Romania. While in Romania, students worked with abandoned children In Bucharest and Bistrita. Also, in Bistrita students visited an early intervention program in a rural village aimed at increasing literacy rates, worked in the Child Life Program at the local hospital and at the placement center from children with special needs. All students participated in the after school program in Bistrita by developing a learning activity for the low income children who attend the program. Nursing students developed learning activities focused on oral hygiene, nutrition and learning about the cardiovascular system. In addition, some students were able to accompany a physical therapist on home visits to families with special needs children. Nursing students also got the opportunity to visit the local school of nursing in Bistrita, tour the hospital and spend time discussing health care in Romania with nurses and doctors. Despite the very busy schedule students had the opportunity to tour Peles Castle in Sinaia and visit the walled medieval city of Sighisoara. Overall, students provided services to our host organization, Fundatia Inocenti, and learned a lot about the differences in culture, health and the sociopolitical situations between Romania and the United States.
