SF State Nursing Faculty Meet With Health Care Providers in China

Assistant Professor of Nursing Carole Kulik and Assistant Professor of Nursing/Director of Simulation Kathleen Shea (pictured above) traveled last month to China, where they gave presentations to health care providers in Beijing and Fuzhou. Carole Kulik and Kathleen Shea at Beijing summit In Beijing, the two were invited to speak at the International Nursing Management Summit, which was held at the 301 Military Hospital. Other invited speakers included leaders from Singapore General Hospital and Harvard University.

Kulik presented lectures on “Evidence Based Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing,” and Shea presented her pilot study, “The Effect of Debriefing for Meaningful Learning on Student’s Knowledge and Perception of Instruction.” The visiting SF State faculty members toured the 301 Military Hospital campus, pediatrics outpatient clinic and the 35-bed inpatient pediatric unit. The hospital opened a new state-of-the-art outpatient facility in 2016. The campus offers more than 6,000 inpatient beds, outpatient clinics, and rehabilitation center, and employs more than 4,000 nurses. In Fuzhou, Kulik and Shea visited the School of Nursing at Fujian Medical University. The school offers BSN, MSN and doctoral degrees in nursing as well as midwifery practice certification. It includes a five-story Experimental Learning Center, which offers students didactic as well as practical experience in skills labs, virtual simulations and high-fidelity simulation activities.

Shea, who presented “Developing, Implementing and Expanding a Simulation Program in an Academic Setting,” was invited to participate in collaborative research with simulation educators in Fujian and to develop exchange student opportunities. Kulik has been invited to become a visiting professor at the school to develop a leadership curriculum at the advanced practice level. The SF State faculty members found the cultural exchange opportunity to be enriching and informative; they are honored to be invited to collaborate with the nursing leaders of Beijing and Fujian in the near future.
