Dr. Mary-Ann van Dam Retires
Mary Ann van Dam, Ph.D., RN, PNP retires this spring after 31 years with SF State’s School of Nursing. She began as clinical faculty and later became a lecturer, tenured faculty member, professor and director of the School of Nursing. She taught pediatric nursing, advanced pediatric nursing and nursing ethics. She has been a member of nursing societies such as American Nurses Association, Society of Pediatric Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau International Honors Society of Nursing. Her scholarship has focused on lesbian parenting and lesbian identity disclosure. In Fall 2014 the Mary Ann van Dam School of Nursing opened in Ukwala, Kenya where Van Dam worked as a volunteer pediatric nurse and health educator with the Matibabu Foundation serving health needs of children in impoverished areas since 2009. In the future she plans to travel and continue her passion for nature photography and scuba diving.
