Hanson Yu Receives Philip Derf Service Award
Philip Derf was a student in our nursing program at SF State from 1990-1994 who was known as an extraordinary asset to his fellow classmates. His commitment to public service touched many of the faculty and students. Sadly, he passed away before completing the program. In his memory, it has become a tradition SF State School of Nursing that each graduating class chooses one classmate from amongst its ranks to receive the honorary award aptly titled the Philip Derf Award.
This Fall 2021 semester recipient is Hanson Yu. Barry Kuhn, Reproductive Health lecturer, presented the award during the Pinning Ceremony on December 17 at Annex I, "Hanson, you have earned the respect of your classmates and instructors through the past 2 years. You are known as a class leader who knows how to build connections and is helpful to all. Your classmates describe you as dependable, hardworking and knowledgeable and while in my class you always were such great organizer for both your classmates and me. As the communications and PR officer for our Nursing student association, you kept our nursing students connected to each other and informed, helping to foster a sense of community, all while volunteering, interning and being an excellent student. I know that I speak for both your classmates and the nursing faculty when I say we are very proud of you and congratulations on being the 2021 recipient of the Philip Derf Service award."
Please join us in congratulating Hanson!
